Jesse Jackson repeats call to investigate Florida vote

Nov. 22, 2000 | 3:50 p.m.

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson renewed his demand
Wednesday for Attorney General Janet Reno to investigate affidavits
taken from black and immigrant Florida residents who claim they were
kept from voting in the presidential election.

``They must act -- not wait until the election is over and then react,''
Jackson said of the U.S. Justice Department.

Jackson said he spoke to Reno Wednesday and urged her to conduct
public hearings before the final voting results in Florida are certified.

Reiterating his calls for an investigation, Jackson attempted to get his
voice heard, scheduling a news conference in Chicago amid a continued
flurry of Republican and Democratic legal maneuverings over hand
recounts in three Florida counties.

As the race for the presidency hangs in the balance, Jackson said he
was speaking on behalf of black voters, including Haitian immigrants, as
well as Floridians who do not speak English.

``Many of them did not get language assistance and were turned away
from the polls,'' Jackson said. ``Or they were in line when the polls
closed and never got to vote.''

``These massive irregularities fundamentally violate Section 2 of the
Voter Rights Act,'' he said.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington did
not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
