In practice the trimester scheme wasn't much of a compromise. It was 99% a victory for the pro-choice side. The ability to restrict abortion even in the third trimester was almost non-existence as there is an allowance for the health of the mother, and this has been interpreted to include mental health, which itself has been interpreted broadly.
