Democrats Still Have No Plan for Social Security

Blogs for Bush

I thought maybe there was hope for the Democrats yesterday after the Senate unanimously voiced support for fixing Social Security. But, today it's clear that their Social Security strategy is merely to oppose Bush and offer no plan of their own.

This will have dire consequences for the Democratic party. A new poll shows that "three-fifths of people 55 and older think Social Security private accounts for younger workers are a good idea, as long as their own benefits remain untouched," clearly showing that once seniors are educated about Bush's plan that they support it.

The survey, conducted by Ayres, McHenry & Associates, had some very promising results for President Bush. Sixty-six percent of seniors think the current Social Security system is "is not financially sound, and needs significant changes," and almost as many think it would be "irresponsible if Congress does not make significant changes to Social Security."

Democrats have resorted to scare tactics in their never-ending quest to oppose anything Bush does, using "privatization" to describe Bush's plan because of its negative connotation. However, despite their negative ant-Bush plan campaign, it is clear that people recognize there is a problem with Social Security and want something to be done about it. The only people who are responding to this are President Bush and the Republicans. Now that Senate Democrats have gone on the record that Social Security needs to be fixed and should be a priority, the longer they go without proposing a plan of their own, the worse their prospects are for 2006 and 2008.
