India Gives Freedom to Private Companies to Fix Internet Fees

New Delhi, Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The government has given
freedom to private companies to fix the fees that they will
charge from users for providing Internet access.

The government will allow ''market forces'' to determine the
fees charged by the private companies selling Internet access,
the department of telecommunications said in a statement.

In September this year, the government had allowed private
companies to provide a telephonic link to the Internet. It had
also said that it will not charge any license fee from the
private companies for the first five years and the license period
would be for 10 years.

The private companies, apart from using the department of
telecommunications network, have also been allowed to use the
excess capacity of the telecommunications network of the railways
and the Power Grid Corp. Ltd., a state-owned power transmission
company, the department said.

So far the state-owned Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd., or VSNL,
the country's only overseas phone service company, was the only
company providing Internet access in the country.

The government has also asked financial institutions and
banks to give ''facilities and encouragement to new
entrepreneurs'' that provide Internet access, the department
said.
