Of course, I listened to Radio Moscow, Terrence. I spent more than twenty years working for its American opposite numbers (Radio Liberty, Voice of America). I also had to read (ugh!) Pravda, Izvestia, et al. every day.

Total propaganda, phony and boring to boot. Of course. But for domestic consumption.

At the negotiating table, the Soviets were generally much more "reasonable." And...more predictable. Not that they did not try to get away with whatever they could, but hey, as you say, we had satellites, etc.
