[Incidently, this past week, there was an article in the Los Angeles Times about how banks found themselves working more closely with Microsoft in internet banking and how they were becoming increasingly alarmed and worried about Microsoft's intentions. Will internet banking eventually be "folded" into the OS?]

Several years ago, Gates made an off-hand remark about how the computer systems used in banks are "dinosaurs". This was interpreted by some to mean that the banks themselves are dinosaurs, which Gates has since said was not what he meant. Certain bankers have been scared to death of MSFT ever since.

IMO, yes, Internet banking software will be built into Windows in the future. MSFT will not buy or become a bank. They just want to sell the banks on Windows to replace all that IBM equipment many of them have now. Banks are among the truest of the blue.

This is not bad for all banks, only for reactionary banks. In fact, I bought a stake in Wells Fargo (WFC) about a year ago because they are more committed to electronic banking than others. It's up nicely, though there have been other factors, too, of course.
