That reminded me of something I've been meaning to mention. Not everyone, particularly very old people, has family. I don't. And some that have family don't have family with whom they can collaborate constructively on these issues. I've spent enough time in old folks' communities to know that many have children who don't want to have anything to do with them. I wonder if as many as half of old people have someone to step in under these circumstances. We just can't blow this off by "leaving it up to the family."
