Enter Java... Java offers an alternative platform to Windows which just so happens to run on top of Windows or OS/2 or anything else for that matter. Once developers start writing portable software Microsoft loses its monopoly position. It's that important. Microsoft is scared, really scared that that is going to happen. Microsoft's technology is under threat because it's vastly inferior. You do not come out of nowhere and challenge a monopoly merely by having a superior product; it has to be an industry-rocking, paradigmatic shift of mind-boggling proportions, give or take a boggle or two.
