Reading about he Ukraine giving up nuclear weapons in 1994? Good!
Let me refresh your memories.
You can read by yourself
The moment was Post cold war. The world worries were:
Non-proliferation and Security
1) Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons Europeans were worried
Distant second the Russians were worried
2) That westerners would take advantage of the USSR collapse and take over eastern Europe (Germany had just bought its Eastern part aka re-unifications) and the poorer Easterners might selloff. Russians worried about that knowing the French and the British had done before.
As history shows they like to have a go at Russia once in a while.

Ukraine did the right thing handing over its nuclear arsenal.
First because staying nuclear, in a case of a nuclear conflict, it wd be obliterate in a couple hours even though it had nothing to do with that conflict.
Second, it would not be subject to a situation such as Iran's suffering embargos for not signing non-proliferation.

Today, Security worries did not disappear.
Keep in mind 2 things:
1) Imagine Ukranian recent history (past 2 decades) if they had that nuclear arsenal. Europeans would not be sleeping at night.
2) That 'having a go to Russia" thing? Is alive and well.
The Europeans (as always) want the Ukranian natural resources.

Think critically and you see the truth.
