Do you know what happened when Yugoslavia split?
Yes. That is what was in the Europeans minds in 1994.
In 1994 the Europeans thought: Imagine having an Yugoslavian situation in a country with 1,900 strategic nuclear warheads ! That is six times what China has today.
It is enough to destroy every US city above US 50,000 people three times oves and with warheads to spare.
Thinking about those warheads to spare the Europeans looked to their BMWs and Mercedes and said no: Lets get these ballistic missiles out of the hands of the Ukrainians and concentrate them in the hand of Russia.
They should be thankful for Putin to have kept them. I would.
That is the reason for the push for the de-nuclearizaton of Ukraine.
