Japan PC server shipments rise, NEC
share shaved

TOKYO, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Japan's domestic shipments of personal
computer (PC) servers rose 18.9 percent in the six months to
September 30, with non-Japanese firms such as Dell Computer Corp (NasdaqNM:DELL - news) and
Compaq Computer Corp (NYSE:CPQ - news) posting strong gains.

Figures released by the Multimedia Research Institute on Wednesday showed half-year shipments of
119,000 PC servers, which act as gateways for other PCs accessing the Internet and allow them to
share functions such as data retrieval and printing.

The total value of the shipments was 105 billion yen ($970.3 million) and Multimedia Research forecast
growth would continue at the same pace in the second half of the business year to March 31.

NEC Corp , Japan's biggest manufacturer of PC servers, saw its share of the market fall to 27.4 percent
in the April-September half-year from 30.5 percent in the same period in 1999.

Fujitsu Ltd kept its second-place standing, giving up a tenth of a percentage point with a 17 percent
market share.

Compaq and Dell both rose to nab 15.3 percent and 5.8 percent of the market respectively.

A similar report by International Data Corp (IDC) a month ago showed similar gains.

Total PC server shipments for the business year were expected to reach 280,000 units, for a gain of 28
percent year-on-year.

Following is a breakdown of major manufacturers' domestic shipments of PC servers.
