I think that appeals to patriotism and national pride as a motive to improve American society and play a constructive role in the world will suffice.

Yeah, maybe.

The friend with whom I had breakfast this morning and I got into a discussion on a subject he and I had never covered in the 25 years we've been friends. He, who BTW voted for Bush twice, argued protectionism and I argued free trade. He argued that we had an obligation to our people, not to the Chinese. I argued that it wasn't about helping the Chinese but that free trade was the best way to take care of our people in the long term. He said to tell that to someone who was out of a job.

So, "improving American society" is all well and good in the abstract but difficult in the particulars.
