EU commission urges action to prevent bio-terrorism

Brussels - The European Commission on Wednesday warned against the dangers posed by potential biological attacks, urging European governments to improve cooperation to prevent such threats. "Although in the past terrorists used explosives or improvised explosive devices, they may in the future resort to non-conventional means such as biological weapons or materials," the EU executive body warned.

EU member states must step up cooperation to prevent intentional spreading of infectious illnesses or products such as anthrax, the commission said.

Five people died in the United States in 2001 of anthrax.

"The risk of bio-terrorist attacks is statistically low, but its consequences can be devastating," the commission said.

It suggested that the EU could help finance limited stocks of vaccines for highly contagious pathogens as has already been the case in the 27-member bloc's fight against bird flu.

EU industry and national authorities are expected to come up with ideas for action in the next three months. It is the first step for possible EU legislation next year.
