I thought this was a pretty good take on Donald Trump's appeal. I liked the authors use of the word "Elites". Should America be ruled by elites? If they are elites then what are we? nationalinterest.org Americans would like to think that our government is of, by and for the people. But is it? It is not if our government is of, by and for the elites. One writer said that he believed that our government was of the naive, by the naive and for the naive.
Abraham Lincoln closed the Gettysburg address with these words: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Bill Clinton embarrassingly said in a statement: “The last time I checked, the Constitution said ‘of the people, by the people and for the people.’ That’s what the Declaration of Independence says.” Of course he was wrong on both counts. DUH
Daniel Webster appears to be the first to come close to using the phrase: It is, Sir, the people’s government, made for the people, made by the people, and answerable to the people. The people of the United States have declared that this Constitution shall be the supreme law.”
So where are we today? Those who make up the Federal government have all taken an oath to uphold, defend and protect the Constitution of the United States. We witness all too often the violation of that oath by all three branches of our government. We, the people, are fully expected to overlook it because, after all, they are the elites.
It appears the United States of America now has a government of the elites, by the elites and for the elites.
