That isn't what happened here, though. What happened was a cooler than usual summer in the Arctic in 2013. That was an outlier year, its effects rolled over to 2014, rebuilding some of the multi-year ice that is in such short supply.

As I keep repeating, sea ice extent is the least useful metric at either pole. In the Antarctic, it is the ice on the land and the ice shelves that are more important. In the Arctic, the important measure is ice thickness since that is a way to measure mult-year ice. Ice thickness continues its downward trend.

How 2015 shakes out is still unclear. They are expecting a decline from last year as to extent, but not as much as the local minimum in 2012. But still it is going to be far less than existed even 10 years ago.
