Our country, as a country built on the notion of cheap gas forever, is the country that's going to feel the pain the most from peak oil. Everything we buy is going to cost a LOT more, just from the transportation costs. We're all spread out and dependant on gas vehicles to get us from here to there. Suburbia is a creation of cheap gasoline and lots of land.

So, what does it mean for us investors? Buy guns? Not a bad notion. Buy central city properties in areas with decent public transportation? Will Compton CA be more desirable than Corona CA in five years? I think so.

Carter was a visionary, but he was also a downer, unable to sell the truth. I think he wasn't re-elected because of the Iranian hostage crisis. I hated his response then. In retrospect, every hostage who survived owes his life to Jimmy Carter, and that was every single one of them. That, and that his rescue attempt was a total failure as well!

Recently I've seen some disparaging comments about the notion of slapping a big tax on gasoline to fund a "Manhattan Project" for oil replacement. I think it's past time. It would have been a lot less painful if we'd done it earlier. That requires intelligent leadership, which is something we don't have now.
