<< Iwas enlisted in LA and did basic at Ft Ord. I laugh as I remember being warned to watch out for "Zoot Suiters" as I was waiting in LA to go there. That was 8 years after the "Zoot suit riots.">>

In 1941 at age 18 I was in the ROTC at UofA (Alabama) for 2 years then entered the AF at beginning or 1944. Sent to Detroit, to Ft Sheridan Il, to Buckley Field CO for Basic, to Langley Field CO, for armament training, to several airfields in Texas for B-29 training, to Tinker Field CO for gun computer training (22 weeks), to Denver for overseas shots, to Walker, Ka to join a B-29 crew.
To Seattle for shipping to Guam via Hawaii and Ulithy. Later to Saipan and Tinian.

The closest I came to shooting anyone was when some Germans I was guarding in Seattle set a field of grass on fire and I pointed a shotgun at them with orders to put it out. Which they did, very swiftly.

So you can tell those new recruits not to worry, they are probably safer in the service than in civilian life and will have an opportunity to see the world.
