You should see something similar to this on the bottom of your screen...

The icons with black lines around them are open and running something (an application). The ones without are just icons to allow you to click on them to open.

When you move your mouse over the browser icon (the Google Chrome swirl in this case) you should see something like this...yours will look different depending on the open windows you have...


Notice that there is nothing open with Internet Explorer (the script blue e icon on the left circled with red.
The Chrome browser has two windows open (see the little shadow next to the icon?). When you hover your mouse over the icon, the two little previews pop up and you can move your mouse over one and click to restore it to the desktop.
