James -- I've been in James a lot this weekend. I didn't get to all the Romans passages again, but I wanted to comment on James a little and what you have pointed to as a disagreement between James and Romans unless James was preaching Judaism.

The episle references faith in Christ a number of times in the letter.

James has a peculiar style to his writing that is not found elsewhere in the other epistles. In fact, it is more reminiscent of O.T. writings.

Specifically, James makes wide use of contrast -- much like the Proverbs. Faith/doubt. worthless religion/valuable religion. Rich/poor. Sinful nature/God's nature. Godly wisdom/Earthly wisdom. Selfish ambition/unselfish ambition. Stability/instability.

James discussion of faith and works is predominantly a discussion about faith. good faith/bad faith. A "bad" faith is a simple spoken acknowledgment without anything else. A godly faith must by definition produce action. The works don't save, but a saving faith will produce action.

I believe James is deliberately using an oxymoron when he says "faith alone." Our faith can't be separated completely from what we do -- that seems to be the bottom line to me. What do you think?

I'll admit that if we look at the one verse you mentioned adn the passage in Romans, there may appear to be an inconsistency, but James is talking about the characteristics of faith when the whole passage is taken together.

What is the "law of liberty" mentioned by James before? Was loving our neighbor called a royal command before Christ?

God Bless you brother

(I'm still studying this -- I did look into the Acts -- it's interesting to read the whole account there -- espcially Peter's speech prior to James -- most notable is that James didn't voice any disagreemnt with Peter's characterization of the Mosaical Law)
