Speaking of NAND, if anyone has any idea of what is going on in terms of market share of the following categories, I'd love to read.
In about 2016 the eMMC market was about 60-65% Samsung (with internal controllers), 30-35% SK Hynix (with SIMO controllers) and 5-10% "other" with little clarity on who that was.
Since UFS came out at about the same time, SK made it's own controllers, and SIMO partnered with MU for UFS with SIMO controllers.
Does anyone have any idea what the market share for UFS products looks like today? MU-SIMO is growing well, but since they started from zero it doesn't take much to grow well.
SIMO says that Samsung and SK have tried to exit the legacy eMMC market, because eMMC goes with NAND chips that are really small in storage volume compared to UFS and SSD products. SIMO and Phison make and sell eMMC controllers, but to whom? Anybody know? Anybody know anything about eMMC market share?
I'm especially interested in the UFS market - is it limited to Samsung, SK and MU (since UFS is mainly cell phones, and those guys can supply both DRAM and NAND), or are their other NAND makers trying to get that space? Anybody know? Is it true that UFS is mainly cell phones, or are there other sizeable applications? |
