Hi Jeff:

The sub-$1000 PC market is going to get MUCH larger than anyone ever thought possible.

With Compaq selling a respectable Pentium-200 for $999 (we know the next step is $899) and a Cyrix-180 machine for $799 ($699 by Christmas ?), we are already getting there in a major way.

Another clue is to look at all the on-line auctions (like Onsale, eBay, Haggle, SurplusAuction) selling new and refurbished, very powerful machines for $600 and $700. It's amazing what you can get for $1000 in those places.

A few weeks ago, I heard that 25 percent of PCs now sold are in the under $1000 category and that 75 percent are under $1500. Within a year, I wouldn't be surprised to see 50 percent under $1000.

Intel's margins will be forced way down. Volume will only make up for part of it.

And, I think, a big loser because of this will be Dell, which REFUSES to sell anything for under $1500. I expect a big disappointment from them sometime during 1998.

Doug
