Saddam seemed willing to leave the U.S. alone - he certainly didn't pose enough of a threat to justify the current war. This war is about U.S. influence in the middle east. The hope is that by exerting control over a country with the second largest oil reserves in the world (with 90% of the land still unexplored mind you) the U.S. exerts more power internationally over countries like China - who depend on mid east oil. The fact that countries such as Iraq and Iran have recently been pricing their oil in euro-dollars poses a greater threat to the standard of living of Americans than you understand. Things like destroying WMD are just side items but not the "real" justification for the war. What will the U.S. do if Iraq becomes democratic and then votes the U.S. off it's soil? Answer - nothing - it will stay put despite all the high talk.
