Then how come my brokerage statement says I made 35% in the last month and 50% in the last year?

Intel's operating earnings grew 7% from Q4'98 to Q4'99 even totally ignoring their "acquisition costs." Operating Earnings are the only kind that matter. If I wanted a $2 per share mutual fund, I'd buy one, not Intel.
