LT,

Actually I think they have been late at every platter density since 6 GB when I started to look at things like that (as a last desperate measure to figure out if WDC, MXTR and HDD have any hope). I just don't see that Fugitsu has any advantage at desktop disks. Except as you say, to absorb fixed costs, and round out their product line.

I think there is something else looming on the horizon that could shift the DD terrain. What accounts for the huge price differential between desktop and "enterprise" drives ?
With the 100 MB/sec IDE speeds, do the scsi drives really justify their price premium ? An enterprising company could lash a dozen Maxtor 80-GB IDE drives into a terabyte storage server, put in a gigabyte of DRAM cache and I think the performance of the machine would be similar to other terabyte servers based on SCSI. If that were a reasonable design, I think it would enhance Maxtor's value significantly. Since I think they are the best at multi-platter drives.

Is it too ridiculous to contemplate ?

Rgards, and I appreciate very much the information in your and the other very well informed people on this thread).
