actually, i've had about a 150% return on a XOM play in just the last 5 weeks, thanks to a suggestion that uhmuhnum made on Jan 12:

Right now you can buy XOM Jan '07 leap strike price $60 for $2.1. My gut is telling me that these are way too cheap.

i thought that was a very good idea so i bought some of those very LEAPS, for 2.10 to 2.20, as i recall. last trade was 5.30.

there are all kinds of ways to play the market without stepping into the pink sheets.
