Laptop keyboard question ...

As we all know, if you need to type a 'special' character, you can hold down the left 'Alt' key and enter the decimal ASCII code of the character on the number keypad. Like magic, once the third digit is pressed, the character appears.

Now the question: My laptop doesn't have a separate number keypad, so how do I perform this (keyboard) miracle.

Thanks, PW.

P.S. Windows Character mapping program can gimme some special characters, but it's not anywhere near as convenient.
