Lou just want to point out one thing in your post even though it is old. Now if anybody asks why we need open standards like Java read this article.

Now you have to ask yourself how does the consumer get the best product if MS is monopolising its OS. You guess it - you don't you get Microslop. Open standards are the only way you will get good competition and evenually the consumer gets what it deserves the best product and that's not Microslop.
