Include the hidden and not-so-hidden subsidies and the cost of gasoline is much higher than the price at the pump.

Some may be of the mistaken opinion that the invasion of Iraq was not about oil but it was. The direct monetary costs of the Iraq fiasco: costofwar.com

shrub's administration is also giving away billions to oil companies.

Of course, all this is borrowed money but it's OUR money that has to repay it.

As far as "peak energy", it has a few definitions.
One definition is that point when energy production begins to decline on a per capita basis.
That's already happened.
