Wegener Communications Announces COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand
Will Provide Major Broadcast Networks State-of-the-Art Satellite Management Capabilities
DULUTH, Ga., March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Wegener Corporation (Nasdaq: WGNR - news), announced the introduction of COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand, a leading-edge scheduling program allowing major broadcast television networks, private corporate networks and other Wegener customers to automate the scheduling of satellite transmissions; including the setting of correct frequencies, transponders and other equipment without the need for dedicated personnel. Bandwidth on Demand enables the networks to more effectively manage their costly satellite bandwidth from a single COMPEL server and generate significant time and cost efficiencies. Specific applications for COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand include remote satellite news gathering and occasional satellite transponder use.
``The addition of Bandwidth on Demand to the COMPEL Control server provides our broadcast customers with a robust set of satellite management solutions and positions Wegener as a leader in this important broadcast industry segment,' commented Keith N. Smith, president of Wegener Communications. ``The COMPEL Control server represents the state-of-the-art in satellite transmission and bandwidth management. Wegener is already an industry leader in the manufacturing of high-quality, state-of-the-art hardware solutions for satellite communications. Now with COMPEL and subsets like Bandwidth on Demand, Wegener has developed a seamless suite of software solutions to augment our sophisticated hardware offerings. We are dedicated to developing and supporting additional COMPEL components that provide operating and cost efficiencies to our customers along the entire Wegener product line.'
COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand is a graphical user interface (GUI) that links with Wegener's COMPEL IRD management system. Remote SCPC (single channel per carrier) uplinks are controlled through the COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand scheduler. The software recognizes available transponder segments and requests for bandwidth from remote uplinks. By assembling all available bandwidth and demands for that bandwidth in a single application, a network operator can efficiently utilize space segment and save costs.
COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand is part of a total remote uplink management system that includes a Compel Site Controller and an ENVOY, the integrated digital video encoder and satellite modulator. The COMPEL Site Controller receives real-time COMPEL commands and controls the ENVOY. As a remote uplink site readies to come on line, COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand transmits control signals to the appropriate ENVOY to start transmitting its signal. At the end of the program segment, COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand sends another command to turn the remote uplink transmit signal off.
``Managing occasional satellite transponder use has always been extremely difficult,' said Wegener Communications Vice President, Marketing, Paul Harr. ``However, the power of COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand has overcome this problem and allows network operators to save on transponder costs and manage their assets more efficiently.'
COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand will be demonstrated at NAB2000 (National Association of Broadcasters conference) in Las Vegas, Nevada in April.
