QS, an unscientific observation is that shorting puts more stock on the ask, hence discouraging buyers as they see numerous trades at the ask but the price does not rise.

It is more of a disincentive to buying as the shorting is being done than a way to "push down" a stock. OTOH, if a flat performance on an up market day encourages more longs to sell, it has an indirect effect.
