James:

Great post! I'm going to defer, however, to the engineers on
this board to put the information you got in the right context.
To help move things along I've posted an excerpt (next post)
from the HMTT 5/96 prospectus that describes the disk
manufacturing process. Interesting, interesting stuff, you got there.

As far as the top 7 disk drive makers go, I am aware that the
Singapore government, because it is a tiny island nation effectively
at full employment, has specifically targeted the highly automated
disk drive industry as one of the industries it wants to attract
through an aggressive incentive program. The recent purchase of
the disk drive operations of Micropolis by Singapore Technologies
may be an indication of the Singapore government's proactive efforts
to attain its goal of centering 30% of the global disk drive
industry in Singapore by the year 2000. The Koreans are also
players The Japanese are, of course, major players here. In terms
of platters they control about 1/3 of the global market. In terms
of MR heads, I think Glenn Perry alluded to their major presence
in this area as well.

I'll see what I can dig up from the disk drive makers' 10Qs.

Thanks.

Gus
