Sometimes the register is SO STUPID - unlike Itanium, Sledgehammer DOES NOT USE AN EMULATOR to execute X86 code - IT IS ALREADY AN X86 MACHINE!!! It executes the standard instruction set natively. It is kind of like the 286/386 transition - it simply extends the 32 bit registers and instructions to allow some 64 bit operations, much as the 386 extended 16 bit 286 registers and instructions to 32 bits. All of the old stuff is still there - it's built on a thunderbird core for crissakes. These guys are so far out to lunch...
