Shalin: I've got to correct you and me regarding Fred Chan's statements in the conference call (I just listened to it again)about 2.2mm units. He stated that ESST's estimates of total VCD units sold in the marketplace by all firms in "the quarter four" (wish I could type that with his accent in there) was 2.2mm units. Of that number, he said ESS did 650m. He did not state the total number of VCD chipsets sold by ESS in 1996.
This is still 29.5% of the 4th quarter market according to Chan's account. In the CUBE conference call neither Balkanski nor Burke broke this unit number out for the 4th quarter. Rather, Balkanski stated that CUBE had over 90% of the VCD market for the year 1996.
Now with 90% of 6mm, 600m is left for ESS for the entire year. Or 90% of 7mm leaves ESS with 700m for the entire year. And we know that ESS did not do all their business in the last quarter, so I think it behooves somebody to reconcile the disparity. No such question was asked of Chan in the call.
