Ericsson sees systems markets reviving by end-2001

HANOVER, Germany, March 21 (Reuters) - Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson <LMEb.ST> said on Wednesday it expected mobile systems markets in the United States and Europe to recover towards the end of this year.

Torbjorn Nilsson, Ericsson vice president for marketing and strategy, said an anticipated shift by U.S. telecoms operators to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard from their currently favoured TDMA standard (time division multiple access) was reducing TDMA orders.

"GSM has not yet taken off but I expect this to happen towards the end of 2001," Nilsson told Reuters at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover, Germany.

"The outlook for the United States in 2001 is very positive," he said. Ericsson expected to have next year three major U.S. GSM customers -- AT&T <T.N>, Voicestream <VSTR.O> and Singular, he added.

In Europe, operators' mobile systems investment had been affected negatively to some extent by high costs for third-generation licences, Nilsson said.

"In Europe I think mobile systems (orders) will pick up speed at the end of 2001," he said.
