Re giving blood - make sure you drink the amount of liquid liquid equivalent to the amount of blood given once you have finished. For instance having given 500 ccm means you need to consume (at least) half a liter of drinks. Do it on the spot. And of course you should better avoid coffee and specially anything alcoholic. In any case listen to the orders or suggestions of the personnel.

Without drinking enough to blow your "balloon" back to the original volume you stand a good chance of getting in troubles because of - what else - loss of blood. I keeled over once (cold sweat, could not stand anymore) and were it not at a party where one of the guests was a nurse I would be in serious trouble. I've known better since.
