The final nail in the coffin of voice switching vs IP.

Excerpted from "Ibasis Goes Around the Globe to Trumpet Internet Phoning" - IBD

"More circuit-switched telecommunications companies are turning to Internet phone providers to help transmit customers' calls. Internet Protocol telephone revenue is expected to rise to more than $23 billion to 2003 from $1.1 billion in 1998, says International Data Corp."

OK. So what does a 20 fold increase in voice traffic over the Internet mean and how does it affect my investments?

It means that sales of legacy voice switching equipment will be rapidly lost to Internet Protocol equipment.

The obvious implication is you don't want to be invested is in companies that are heavily weighted in the former, and you should direct your investments into the latter.

The former are Nortel, Lucent, Ericcson, Alcatel, Tellabs.

The latter are Ciena, Juniper Networks, Sycamore Networks, JDS Uniphase, and SDL Inc.
