>>> what makes you tihkn he's not doing that? <<<
Cause I think Java hype and beating Billg have clouded his focus.
And if DEC, Sequent, HWP and IBM are selling Unix servers, and making good profits, he's not doing his job! Business is about winning. Java is sapping energy that could be spent pushing Sparc and Solaris, Sun's bread and better. Focusing instead on making Java toasters may be good fun, but it is not where the money is. The money is in the enterprise. If Java helps promote the selling of Sun's servers, I'm all for it.
But that's not what he's doing with it, is he? He's trying to pit Java against Windows. What a bullshit waste of time. There's no money in these cheap little clients. It does not matter what client a Sun server is hooked to (Java station, X Windows terminal, x windows on a pc, client/server Visual Basic app on Win95) all of them need the kind if computing power a 64 processor sun server can provide.
The window to turn Solaris in to a top notch application server is closing (did you read the Byte review of Web servers where they compare Solaris and NT?). They got only got a few years (5 years at most) left before NT can scale and is stable. NT is just gonna get better and better. The softies are relentless. They aren't going to quit till they own it all.
Leave Java toys to the Sunbeams of this world, where unit volume is the only thing that matters. |
