as i told you, i posted your question on netscape newsgroups. this morning i found that an answer had been posted back. your question was copied and pasted verbatim. here is the suggested remedy. btw, in case you've never visited newsgroups, these guys are good. <g3>

"Visit the UFAQ "downloads" section and grab file #5 "netscape_cfg.zip".
Then, with Communicator closed FIND the file NETSCAPE.CFG located in
.../communicator/program/ directory and rename it NETSCAPE_CFG.BAK. Then
UNzip the downloaded file to that same directory. Restart Communicator,
you will have to re-enter some previously configured information but you
should now be able to select "direct connection" in the proxie setup.
