German Retailer's Decision Follows Success of Initial Store Installation
AUGSBURG, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 29, 2002--NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR - News) today announced that an Edeka supermarket scheduled to open later this year in Luneburg, Germany, has ordered 12,000 NCR RealPrice(TM) electronic shelf labels (ESLs).
The independently owned Edeka store, "Bergmann's Aktivmarkt," is located in the Edeka Group's North region. One of Europe's leading cooperative retail groups, Edeka is Germany's third largest grocery organization.
This will be the second ESL installation for an Edeka store owned by the Bergmann family. Owner and Managing Director Volker Bergmann has been an enthusiastic proponent of ESLs within the Edeka Group.
"We initially installed 8,000 NCR RealPrice labels in our Adendorf store and have been very pleased with the response of customers and staff," Bergmann said. "Electronic shelf labeling definitely has a positive impact on our operating expenses, and shoppers like having consistent, easy-to-read information at the shelf edge. The decision to equip our new store was an easy one."
NCR RealPrice ESLs are wireless digital tags that attach to shelves or other store fixtures. They display the price of merchandise or food items in large, clear characters and provide other information to shoppers or store personnel. Price discrepancies between shelf and checkout are eliminated because NCR RealPrice is linked to the same computer file used by the store's point-of-sale system.
The first company to offer a wireless system, NCR is a global leader in ESL technology, with nearly 1.5 million tags installed or on order at more than 160 stores in 11 countries.
"The positive feedback from Volker Bergmann is typical among retailers who have installed NCR RealPrice," said Pete Bartolotta, NCR RealPrice vice president and general manager. "In addition to the ESL hardware and software, NCR offers project planning services, infrastructure installation, label overlays and maintenance, including remote support -- all of which contribute to an effective and worry-free implementation."

Chris Skillen needs to eat the NCR words he spouted to shareholders over the last few years. It would be best if he was gone from the scene by the next AGM (assuming there is another AGM).
