DVD-ROM Will Soon Outshine DVD-Video, Forrester Predicts - -December 8, 1997
According to a recent report from Forrester Research, while stand-alone DVD movie players have garnered much of the initial attention, DVD will ultimately be widely accepted by PC manufacturers, helping to transform the PC "into a more viable consumer entertainment device."
The report, entitled DVD's New Content Model, predicts there will be an installed base of 53 million DVD-equipped PCs by 2002, compared to just 5 million DVD movie players.
"For the video industry, the first three to five years of DVD availability will be a low-volume disappointment," says Mark Hardie, senior analyst and author of the report. "Lack of available titles, a high price tag, and the need to add expensive home theater components will discourage consumers from purchasing a DVD-Video player that can't even record their favorite shows."
For PCs, however, "DVD-ROM is the next logical step," Hardie says. "Game, edutainment and reference titles will benefit from DVD's expanded audio and video capabilities, while immense storage capacity will reduce today's cumbersome four-disk titles to one DVD."
Backward compatibility with existing CD-ROMs is another plus, he adds. |
