GENU Completes its Core Pan-European IP Backbone Network
Genuity's Cisco-based DWDM Network Architecture Enables

Cost-Effective and Competitive Bandwidth Increase for Business
Customers Requiring Real-Time, Scalable Services

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--October 17, 2000-- Genuity (NASDAQ: GENU - news), a Tier 1 provider of Internet infrastructure and eBusiness solutions, today announced that it has completed the upgrade of its core Pan-European Internet Protocol (IP) network to 2.5 Gigabits per second (Gbps) wavelengths. The core network utilizes IP-over-DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) to interconnect Genuity's IP facilities in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Paris. The increase in capacity of the core pan-European IP backbone network, based on Cisco technology, will also support Genuity's Dublin, Dusseldorf, Madrid, Manchester, Milan and Stockholm points of presence. In combination with the capabilities of Genuity's Global Network Infrastructure, the significant network increase of Pan-European capacity provides Genuity's clients with greater efficiencies to sustain their increasingly competitive demands to provide global enterprise network solutions.

Genuity's upgraded European network architecture utilizes Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing to separate discrete wavelengths within a pair of optical fibers for transmission capacity. This technology provides for greater transmission distances achieved with less optical amplification, and signal regeneration, decreasing the total number of network elements required to transport data between network facilities. Conventional IP networks utilize SONET (synchronous optical network) or SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) capacity to transport data ranging from OC-3 (155 Mbps) to OC-12 (622 Mbps), requiring more network elements and capital costs to sustain their customer requirements with less capacity.

``The upgrade of our pan-European IP network is part of Genuity's ever expanding global network presence,'' said Andy Mutch, chief operating officer, International, Genuity. ``As we continue to build corporate intranets and business-to-business and business-to-consumer extranets for customers on a global basis, we can scale and meet the demands of these mature, higher bandwidth applications.''

Genuity selected IP routing technologies from Cisco Systems, Inc. (NSDQ: CSCO) to expand the capabilities of its Pan-European network using IP-over-DWDM. Genuity's use of this network technology expands its capacity to deliver eBusiness solutions. By deploying this next-generation IP infrastructure, using Cisco 12000 Series Internet routers and DWDM technology, Genuity is utilizing optical wavelengths of 2.5 Gigabits per second (equivalent to OC-48 capacity) to more efficiently provide a competitive network to meet its business customers' increasing bandwidth demands and in turn offer value added services such as virtual private networks (VPN) and voice-over-IP to meet the needs of their customers.

GTS, the recognized leader in optical internetworking in Europe, provides the optical infrastructure powering Genuity's Pan-European wavelengths. By interfacing the Cisco 12000 routers directly to GTS' wavelength network, Genuity is able to transport data between its facilities at 2.5 Gbps.

``By building this advanced network, where IP is carried directly over the optical layer, we can provide the most efficient and robust networking capabilities to our customers so they can support their wide-area application needs, both today and in the future,'' added John-Francis Mergen, chief engineer of global networking, Genuity. ``We chose Cisco's solution because it offers the lowest network latency and most scalable platform for delivering real-time services to our customers.''

The Cisco 12000 routers are designed to provide the highest scalability and performance services for IP-based networks. Along with Cisco IOS®software, Genuity has built the most reliable IP network possible and can deliver the highest service level agreements to its customers.

``Cisco and Genuity share the goal of helping business users achieve more reliable and higher speed connectivity to support their current and future wide-area applications,'' said Vijay Parikh, vice president and general manager of Cisco's IP POP Systems Business Unit ``Genuity's deployment of this advanced IP network positions Genuity as a global leader in the New World of communications. It also validates Cisco's optical internetworking strategy, where IP is carried directly over the optical layer to provide the most efficient and robust networking capability.''
