Fred: The market massacres stocks of companies that miss the
estimates or the consensus or average of estimates.
So, as difficult as predicting the future is, these
estimates of current quarter earnings are made with some knowledge
of the current conditions. These analysts may have more or less
time and knowledge than the contributors to this thread. Their
estimates affect the price of the stock more than the contributors
to this thread. If they give an honest well-informed estimate,
whether we like it or not, it is good that we hear it. If it is
biased to manipulate the stock, they risk losing credibility and
may be breaking the law. May be investigated and accused.
If we can stand more government regulation, maybe estimate-
givers should be required to disclose conflicts of interest, such as
whether they or their employers own or short the stock. I wrote to
the SEC along this line, and SEC responded saying they're
definitely interested and are studying it.
We all hate being victimized.
