Wave of Destruction

What started as a 9.15 earthquake off the island of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean became the most cataclysmic natural disaster of the modern era. The South Asian tsunami struck the day after Christmas in 2004, but the scope of human devastation was a focus around the world for much of 2005, spurring the largest relief effort in recorded history. The death toll remains unclear, with some observers estimating that more than 300,000 human lives were lost.
