DISCUSSION -- 'IT'S SIMPLY A COMPONENT
SHORTAGE'-NOT ALLOCATION GAMES

Don't you think Compaq wants to sell these iPaqs? You're acting like they are
getting more pleasure trying to make resellers look bad and aggravating
customers than they would selling 100K units a month. Please! It's simply a
component shortage that is experienced any time a product is very popular,
any time the screen everyone likes is in high demand.

It's this simple: VARs will never get any of these. Here's how it works: 1)
Compaq gets first shot on their Web site. 2) Distributors get them in, but
allocate them only to mail order or big-box retail. (Best Buy had plenty in
stock as of a few days ago in my area.) Give up selling hardware! It's over.

Wrong. There are two models of the iPaq from what I read: the 3630 (retail)
and the 3650 (commercial). So the allocation for Best Buy and others is
predetermined in manufacturing, not when Compaq receives them (no
allocation games). The distributors distribute (hence the name) the 3650 to the
VARs.

DISCUSSION -- READER: IT'S THE SAME OLD
PRODUCT ALLOCATION GAME

A reader's complaint that Compaq's iPaq H3650 models are on back order,
even though the consumer models of the products are in the stores, set up a
chain reaction of talkbacks. Here are five entries in the ongoing thread:

Compaq is trying to move most of the blame for lack of product (in the
customer's eyes) back onto the reseller. Compaq is playing product allocation
games (again), pretending they aren't (again), blaming their channel partners
when they get caught doing it (again) and pretending they now have seen their
past errors and are taking steps to correct them (again).

Boo hoo, go buy a Palm and stop complaining. Compaq already has told you
they are far from fulfilling their demand, so why do you keep complaining
about the same thing? The distributors also have told you the item is on back
order. What else do you want? Popular products are hard to get, any
industry, any time.
