Intel, Analog Devices introduce new processor design

NEW YORK, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Chip makers Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news)
and Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE:ADI - news) on Tuesday unveiled a new design for
products that process voice and image signals in new cellphones, handhelds, digital
cameras and other wireless devices that will be connected to the Internet.

The design includes features of digital signal processors (DSPs), which process voice and image signals, as well as a microprocessor that runs software. The new design also cuts power use.

The new chip design takes sqaure aim at a booming market that is currently dominated by Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE:TXN - news)


Products based on the design will be developed and marketed seperately, the companies said.

They said about 100 developers were briefed in April and August of this year to develop both hardware and software around
the design. The companies expect these products to be available over the next 12 months.
