Globalstar`s future in data?

Steven.

I asked this question on the thread a couple of
weeks ago.
No one seemed then to have the full knowledge of this
subject.
So I have done a limited research on my own.

Globalstar as it is designed now can only handle
9600 (7200) baud on a circuit switched modem like connection.
The same is true with the GSM networks but still the GSM
is now being upgraded with GPRS (general packet radio service)to allow up to 112 kbaud.

The bandwidth of Globalstar seems not to be the limiting
factor and multi-channel connection are possible.
Globalstar can thus provide much higher data rate than 9600 baud and by using packet switched (IP) services, allow limited multimedia services.

My prediction is that Globalstar will quickly learn that
the future of their system rests with new services
needing higher data rates.
The system is not going to be overloaded by speaking
customers the next 5 years, even though we hope it will,
so the capacity should be used for data!

Qualcomm is the main contractor for the infrastructure.
If they can make money on developing the hardware and software for higher data rates, I think the system can
become a very powerful tool for people needing more
secure coverage than offered by todays cellular or PCS
systems.

Happy Millenium,
