calypso,

IPsec will eventually become the standard... but there is still a long way to go... It will take some time to get the details ironed out, and beyond that, the implementation of IPsec will take a long time, as it will require IT dep'ts to virtually overhaul their networks...

SET will (contrary to popular belief) eventually succeed, IMO, and gain momentum... especially as we head into mid 1999... I don't see IPsec have any real impact untill 2000 and beyond...

also, IPsec may eventually wind up obviating the need for firewalls ...

The relationship between encryption, security, firewalls, software and hardware... is very complex and entails lots of in depth study to really grasp...

Someone on the RNBO thread asked me to do an industry breakdown on how the various aspects of Internet security are inter-related... and I will try to do it piecemeal... so that people have a better understanding of which companies are in the best position to succeed..

I am no expert in the field... but I have spent a considerable amount of time gaining a understanding of the industry... If there are any experts here on the JAWZ thread, I would certainly appreciate some help...

In fact, in might not be a bad idea to start a thread dedicated to security and encryption where people familiar with the various aspects of the technology can share their insights on how the industry will play out ... and which technologies look the most promising.... I think that there is significant interest in the topic and have found a plethora of misinformation and a general lack of understanding among the investing public... an open forum to share ideas would probably help everyone...

If anyone thinks this is a good idea.... let me know....
