My older son, the economics major, convinced me to give up my Costco membership after he attended Cato University this summer. Seems that Costco uses the reasoning in the Kelo case to get governments to take away private property for their own use.

I admit to being too lazy to do the research, I believe him (and them).

My membership lapsed at the end of August, and we joined BJ's and Sam's instead.

Sams is ever so much nicer than Walmart. Buying in bulk saves mucho bucks. But, like every other warehouse store, you need enough money to buy in bulk and you need a place to put your stuff.

I represent a lot of poor people doing pro bono for Legal Aid. They live hand to mouth, in large part, because they are simply unable to plan far enough ahead. The ones who are able to get out of poverty figure out, for example, that paying huge chunks of money to check cashing companies and other vampires is counterproductive.

I call them vampires even though they're technically part of the free market. Nobody puts a gun to anybody's head and forces them to pay 40% interest -- but anybody who's stupid enough to pay 40% interest is doomed to a life of poverty.

If anybody wants to help the poor, they ought to go after predatory lenders.
