You got it right re new vistas to discover/invent.
When was the last time anyone bought a 78 vinyl for
their hand-crank RCA Victrola? I remember playing
them when I was a kid in the late 40's, early 50's.
You don't have to go back that far either. Any
engineers still using slide rules or even HP
calculator? How about 8-Track tapes? BETAMAX?

The point is that everything changes and eventually
becomes eligible for a spot in a museum when
something better comes along. Desktop PC's will
soon be quaint relics of the 20th century. Why not
a portable device the size of a current cell phone
that is a voice-controlled PC, HDTV, phone etc? I
would be willing to bet that something akin to that
is probably being thought about in some advanced
lab or gov't Black project somewhere.

Apple was there for the PC revolution and they have
it within their grasp to lead the way to the next
whatever it is. I hope they are up to the job.
Having the best thing or the fastest or coolest
thing doesn't get you much more than a footnote in
the history book if you can't sell it. (Betamax by
Sony, GUI by Xerox PARC, etc). Will our Apple be a
Golden Delicious or a sour Crabapple?
