AMZN short interest report, courtesy:
viwes.com
(nice site, very accessible - does searches/charts on the NASDAQ's
short interest database)

Ticker Company Name Month Shares Short Avg Daily Volume Ratio*
AMZN Amazon.com 06/98 8,745,144 2,073,044 4.22 (2-1 split)
05/98 8,625,816 2,347,938 3.67
04/98 6,785,588 1,656,824 4.10
03/98 7,130,964 1,746,636 4.08
02/98 6,445,102 932,376 6.91
01/98 5,975,670 728,894 8.24

Reading the description of reporting dates, this data is
as of 6/15/98, and the volumes above have been adjusted for the
split in late May, early June. Assuming that the float figure
I'm using (15.7 mil. float, post split) is correct -- then half
the float in AMZN was short in mid-June. Kinda explains why
the short sellers were having trouble finding more stock to
short (after some mutual funds hold AMZN long, and that effectively
reduces the float, until they sell).
